Abstract:

Up to 50% of adults and 80% of children with mental health treatment needs do not access services each year (Kazdin & Rabbitt, 2013; Konrad et al., 2009). Even among those who do access care, treatment is often brief; the modal number of sessions attended is just one (Dryden, 2018). Moreover, the average treatment protocol for mental health concerns calls for 16 sessions (Weisz et al., 2017), but most outpatient clients only attend an average of 3.9 sessions (Harpaz-Rotem et al., 2004). This is also complicated by demand for mental health treatment exceeding mental health professionals' ability to meet the growing need for services (APA, 2023). One way to bridge the gap between need, accessibility, availability, and attendance of mental health treatment sessions is through brief interventions. Brief interventions can operate as stand-alone services or as adjunctive services within existing treatment protocols. Unfortunately, few mental health professionals receive training in brief interventions. Therefore, this intermediate-level course will outline parameters of brief interventions and evidence supporting their use for a range of mental health concerns. Interventions grounded on cognitive behavioral therapy and acceptance and commitment therapy will be presented in this webinar.

Objectives:

  1. Describe research behind single-session and brief interventions for mental health challenges.
  2. Identify and implement components of evidence-based brief interventions that can improve mental health and well-being.
  3. Explain essential elements of brief interventions to maximize the impact of each session with clients.

Presenter: Erin Haugen, PhD, LP, CMPC

Dr. Haugen is a licensed psychologist and consultant specializing in clinical & sport psychology. She has a PhD in clinical psychology and is a Certified Mental Performance Consultant ® (CMPC) through the Association for Applied Sport Psychology.

Dr. Haugen is a nationally sought-after speaker in athletic training and sport psychology. She presents regularly at the annual meetings of the National Athletic Trainers’ Association (NATA), Association for Applied Sport Psychology (AASP), American Psychological Association (APA), and the invitation-only Big Sky Sport Psychology Conference. She presents about athlete mental health, interdisciplinary care, ethics, and performance psychology. She authors articles and book chapters related to athlete mental health, sport psychology, ethics, and supervision.

Dr. Haugen is a former member (2017-2019) and past-president (2018-2019) of the North Dakota State Board of Psychologist Examiners (NDSBPE) and is the Founder & CEO of Haugen Performance Consulting, PLLC.
